Mary Frances – Moorcroft Equine Rehabilitation Centre
Some people work to improve the lives of horses. Others dedicate their lives to it entirely. Mary was nominated for her tireless work at Moorcroft Equine Rehabilitation Centre over the past seventeen years, a commitment rooted in both deep care for horses and a strong belief in helping people understand them better. For her, horses are far more than we often give them credit for. Stoic, intelligent, and deeply perceptive, they carry far more than they show. Her work has grown from a simple but powerful intention to help them live better lives, not just physically, but in the way they are understood and cared for. Because alongside helping the horses themselves, she sees a responsibility in sharing knowledge, in guiding others to see more clearly and to do better.
Over time, she became increasingly aware of the number of horses living with pain or discomfort, often misunderstood in the way they were labelled or handled. Behaviour dismissed as difficult or defiant, when in reality it was a response to something deeper. That realisation shaped the direction of her work towards helping both horses and people, creating a space where understanding replaces assumption and where relationships can be rebuilt on trust and respect.
There are challenges in that work. One of the most significant is the balance between domestication and nature, ensuring that even within our care, horses are allowed to live in a way that supports both their physical and mental wellbeing. Her experiences, including time spent working abroad, have exposed her to practices that were difficult to witness, but ultimately strengthened her understanding and deepened her commitment to doing things differently.
Spending time with Mary, what becomes clear is a deep respect for the horse in its entirety. Not just as something to be worked or ridden, but as an individual, sensitive, intuitive, and often far more forgiving than we deserve. Whether on the ground or under saddle, she speaks of connection, of balance, and of a relationship built on listening as much as asking.
Her advice is simple, but carries weight, be kind. Stay open. Keep learning. Seek help when needed, and never resort to force or control. Because at the heart of it all is a belief that horses give endlessly, and in return it is our responsibility to care, to understand, and to give something back.
