Nicky Barrett – Dressage Trainer

Some lives are shaped by horses so completely that it is impossible to separate one from the other. Nicky was nominated for her deep knowledge of dressage training and her ability to inspire true partnerships between horse and rider, something that has been shaped by a lifetime spent alongside them. She was on a pony before she could walk. Childhood memories are woven with horses, returning home from school and sitting on the back of a pony for tea, a life that felt entirely normal at the time. While others had bicycles, she had ponies, only learning to ride a bike much later. From the very start, horses were not just something she did, but something she lived with.

They were her responsibility, her companions, and her teachers. She was brought up to put them first, always. Their needs came before her own, whether that meant making sure they were settled before she ate, or checking on them before finding comfort herself. It was a way of life that shaped not just her horsemanship, but her outlook, teaching her to think beyond herself and to care deeply for those around her.

There are many memories, but the ones that stay most clearly are not always the easiest. The loss of a horse leaves something lasting, a reminder of how much they give in the time they are with us, and how deeply those relationships run. Because as partnerships grow, something shifts. It becomes less about control and more about mutual respect, a quiet understanding where both horse and rider begin to meet each other in the middle.

Through her work, she sees that dynamic play out every day. Horses presenting challenges, asking questions in their own way, and over time she has come to understand that when something is not working, it is not about asking more of the horse, but about explaining it better. A lesson that extends far beyond the arena.

Spending time with Nicky, what becomes clear is that her knowledge is not something fixed, but something that continues to evolve. Because for all her experience, she still sees the horses as the teachers. And perhaps that is where it all comes back to. To look. To listen. And to keep learning from them, every single day.
