The Tuesday Studio: Making Space to Create

The Tuesday Studio: Making Space to Create

It’s surprisingly easy to put your own creativity at the bottom of the list. The Tuesday Studio is a regular space to bring it back to the top.

On Tuesday mornings, a group gather at Forest Lane Studios to draw, experiment, talk about art and make things. We begin with short artist exercises. They might involve drawing without looking at the page, exploring colour, or seeing how many different marks one material can make. The point is to loosen up, squash and judgment on what we create and discover something, rather than produce a perfect piece.

After a cup of tea, there’s time to work on your own ideas. You might arrive with a painting already underway, a sketchbook you’d like to fill, or no clear idea of what you want to make. I move around the studio offering guidance, suggestions and encouragement, while leaving you room to follow your own curiosity.

One of my favourite things about teaching is seeing how differently people respond to the same starting point. Give a group of artists one vase of flowers and you’ll get completely different ways of seeing it.

The Tuesday Studio is for adults who want regular creative time, whether they’re returning to art after years away or already have a practice they’d like to develop. You don’t need to have it all worked out before you arrive. That’s what the studio time is for.
