Why I Started Sketchbook Club

Why I Started Sketchbook Club

A sketchbook is a brilliant place to begin because it belongs entirely to you. It can hold good ideas, strange ideas, unfinished drawings, colour experiments and the occasional page you’d rather turn straight past. All of it counts.

I started Sketchbook Club to give young people time and space to explore art in a working artist’s studio. There’s a different energy when you can spread out, try materials and see what happens without worrying about making something “right.”

We use simple creative exercises to get started, then leave room for each young artist to develop their own ideas. Some love drawing carefully from observation. Others want to layer paint, collage and marks across the page. I’m interested in helping them notice what excites them and giving them the confidence to keep going.

A sketchbook isn’t just preparation for a finished artwork. It’s where you learn how you like to work. It gives you permission to change your mind, start again and discover an idea you couldn’t have planned in advance.

If you have a young person who loves making things, or one who says they “can’t draw” but is curious to try, Sketchbook Club is a welcoming place to explore.
